Made by Making

My time as a creative professional, individual contributor, and senior manager have all shaped how I lead as an executive. Here’s a breakdown on how the various parts of my career have left their mark

Video Production

From million dollar TV commercials to budget-friendly compliance training videos, video production is all about plate spinning. Booking actors, scouting locations, choosing equipment, hiring crews—I’ve done it all. On time, and on budget.

To the right is one of my favorite productions I worked on. I still can’t believe he had to put on all that armor for 3 seconds of video.

Writing

Years spent leading copywriters (and working as one myself, once upon a time), has helped me hone my communication skills. I’m great at distilling complex information, clarifying business speak, translating creative ideas, and presenting with wit and passion.

Art

Breaking down complex shapes, creative problem solving, perspective shifting, and frequent iteration—the never-ending pursuit of improving as an artist has had a huge impact on how I build and lead creative teams. Also I just think drawing is fun (which is why I have a published book). If you’re into looking at art, or you showed up here from the publishing industry, you can find my portfolio here.

Finally, one of the important jobs of being a creative leader is scaling taste. What does good look like to us, and to our customers? How can we maintain that quality level while keeping our costs low, and our output high? We figure this out through smart research, consistent feedback loops, and rapid iteration.
