Drawing the Prince

Like I said before I left for Dallas, I'm trying to beef up my art portfolio before the SCBWI conference at the end of September. I picked up Action Cartooning by Ben Caldwell and I've been doing the sketch exercises in there. It's a pretty basic art book, but I love Ben's style, and he's great at creating memorable characters with dynamic poses. If you're a Penny Arcade reader, he's the guy that did the recent guest Automata strip.

So I was working through the sketches and I decided to do one on the computer so I could see the build up from sketch to final. It was simple running pose. I haven't taken any of the other poses too far past sketch level, because I want to work all the way through the book before I "finish" any of them. The moment I decided to make this the Prince of Persia though, I had to finish it. Here he is rewinding time:


It's not the most dynamic picture, but it was fun to do, and it didn't take that long.
